Arjan has not lost his touch

Veteran Arjan Perera proved that he has not lost
any of his old touch when he took the division one title at the
annual Mercantile Tennis Tournament, which is currently being conducted
at SLTA, courts.
However
National Development Bank was all set to maintain their stranglehold
on the tournament. NDB who are the defending champions have a earned
133 points in the tournament so far, with the Men's division 2 and
3, Women's singles, Women's Doubles and Mixed Doubles yet to be
completed.
DFCC
are way behind the leaders, and have scored 40 points so far. Unichela
are placed 3rd with 29 points. The tournament has been badly affected
due to the current weather conditions prevailing in Colombo with
only the division 1 tournament in the men's tournament being completed.
Arjan
Perera emerged victorious in the division 1 category securing 15
points for NDB. Gazali Ghouse of Nations Trust Bank finished 2nd
with 10 points and P. Musthapha was placed 3rd(5 points).
In
the men's division 2 semifinals D.Gajanayake (UCL) had it easy against
I.Majid (SCH) winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-0, Gajanayake will
meet K.Wickrema (UCL) in the finals. Wickrema received a walkover
in his semi final match.
The
division 3 semifinals saw H.Chandrasekera (Trans Asia) emerge victorious
over K.A.Sudarshana (Trans Asia) 6-4,6-4. In the other semifinal
K de Soyza (NDB) beat L.Jayasekera (Brandex) 7-6,6-3.
In
the Women's singles Tournament R.Kulasuriya of Seylan Bank will
meet M.Liyanage of DFCC in the first semifinal and in the second
semifinal, S.Silva will play the winner of the quarterfinal match
between H.Fernando and S.Abeygunawardene. R. Kulasuriya beat S.Sethwela
6-1, 6-0, M.Liyanage beat K.Dias 6-1,6-1, S.Silva beat A.Perera
in their quarterfinal matches.
The
women's doubles, men's doubles, mixed doubles and over 35 category
men's are still in its early stages and would be completed during
the week. |
