Binupa's
outstanding stroke play
The North East Golf Competition was riddled with contraventions
of the rules. Caddies were seen marking player's cards and several
sets of players were filling in their score in the verandah over
the usual Beers.
Clifford
Cup
The man from the land of the rising sun Satoru Tanokura
was outstanding with 2 great rounds totalling 136 nett. He won the
Clifford Cup beating Binupa Wijesinghe on 139 nett.
Gold
Medal
Normally the preserve of Rusi Captain this year it was
snatched by Scotsman and popular personality Steuart Ritchie who
struck a superb 1 over par 72 and struck gold. Binupa Wijesinghe
came 2nd with an excellent 73 gross.
Centenary
Trophy
Binupa Wijesinghe continued to stay prominent. He averaged
69 over 4 rounds to collect the handsome Centenary Trophy from Tita
Nathanielsz the President. Mithun Perera was in excellent from on
3 under par 281.
Mackinlay
Quaish
Sanjeewa Viravanathan and Teppei Tanokura tied on nett
63 each. Absolutely excellent scores particularly as playing conditions
were quite unfavourable. Tanokura had a better back nine to beat
Viravanathan by a slender margin. There were 2 weekends of highly
competitive golf which were most unfortunately loosely supervised.
The Award Ceremony was brief with the compering quite listless.
Mercifully the back up Band was great with Gavin Senn leading superbly.
Qatar
Airways
Comparatively new in our open skies the elegant Airline
Qatar struck prominence sponsoring golf at the Royal Colombo. Their
buoyant Country Manager Danny Scheppers has been flirting with the
idea of moving into the golf scene and just recently his plans ripened
when he merged with Gerard Amerasinghe smart Chief Executive of
Worldwide Travels and joined Anne Captain to promote and sponsor
a most entertaining fun competition which was very rightly named
Shambles. The ladies Section made a helluva success of this promotion
and they were loaded with accolades at the ceremony after sunset.
Shambles
The mixed shambles event was a convincingly victory for
a team made formidable by Kishani Vethavinayagam and Dhanushi Senadhira
who played excellent golf to help Bandula Weerasinghe and Sanjeewa
Wickremanayake visit the victory stand. The quartet received rousing
applause at the fun filled award ceremony which was compared by
Anne Captain whose patter was quite lively and refreshing.
Adding
to the lavishness of the party Qatar donated an Airline Ticket to
any destination which they wished auctioned for the benefit of the
Ladies section. Schepper handled the "going, going, gone"
operation in style and the buyers who shall remain anonymous paid
a fancy amount in appreciation of the great way in which the Ladies
Section organize their events. Praise was sung for Danny and Gerrard.
