NPC
to probe top cops with drug links
Senior Police officers allegedly under the pay of one of Sri Lanka's
notorious drug barons are to be probed by the National Police Commission.
NPC
Chairman Ranjit Abeysuriya said he would call for a full report
on the matter from Police chief Chandra Fernando. He said that if
substantial evidence was available against police officers, the
Police Commission would conduct its own investigations by making
use of their own officers.
The
alleged links between the senior police officers and the drug baron,
Mohamed Niyaz Naufer alias Potta Naufer, surfaced during police
investigations in the killing of Colombo's High Court judge Sarath
Ambepitiya.
Police
charged that Niyaz Naufer, a confirmed drug dealer, masterminded
the killing. During investigations it has come to light that Mr.
Naufer counted among his close associates some top police officers.
They are said to include those holding the rank of DIGs, SSPs, SPs
and ASPs.
Whilst
documents pointing to payments made to top police officers have
been uncovered, Police sources say there are also photographs where
some officers are seen with the drug baron with their arms on each
other's shoulders. In one instance, a senior officer is also said
to have made available a vehicle with tinted windows for the drug
baron to travel unnoticed.
Evidence
also indicates that the drug baron maintained regular telephone
contacts with some of the police officers. The police who raided
the house of Mr. Naufer in Hulftsdorp also found telephone numbers
of senior police officers in the possession of the wife of the suspect
and on questioning she had said that the numbers were with her as
there were death threats to her husband and whenever he was in trouble
she could inform the police.
Meanwhile,
the Police Inspectors Association has written to the President calling
for a full inquiry to ascertain the involvement of police officers
with the drug baron. |
