Former
Minister Srimani's last journey
The funeral of Democratic United National Front Leader and former
PA Cabinet Minister Srimani Athulathmudali was held at 4.30 pm on
Thursday at the Borella Cemetery.
Ms.
Srimani, 58, was the widow of Lalith Athulathmudali, UNP Minister
in the 1977-94 regime. She led his breakaway DUNF.
Srimani’s
debut in politics was at the 1994 General Elections when she contested
Ratmalana on the PA ticket. She topped the Colombo District with
148,000 preference votes. She was appointed Minister of Transport,
Environment and Women's Affairs in the first Cabinet of the Chandrika
Bandaranaike Kumaratunga Government, a post she held till 1997.
She led an independent group at the 2000 General Elections but failed
to get elected. Thereafter she dedicated her time to promoting the
cause of her late husband.
She
was an old girl of Holy Family Convent, Kalutara, Kurunegala and
Ladies College, Colombo. |
