Relatives
of disappeared seek ‘right to live’ clause
The Organization of Parents and Family Members of the Disappeared
(OPFMD) has asked the government to put into the action the directives
of both the Presidential Commission and the United Nations Human
Rights Commission.
The
organization has further requested that an act be passed to include
the 'right to live' in the Constitution of the country. It hopes
that this will prevent a catastrophe akin to the disappearances
in the early '90s from happening again.
The
OPFMD, which consists of the family members of those who disappeared
during the 1987-1991 period, has also asked that the Rs. 500 monthly
Samurdhi grant be reinstated for the victimised families. The families
have also asked that they receive Rs. 200,000 as compensation for
their loved ones who were lost. Requests have been made to provide
adequate health services to school children, youth and widows of
the disappeared persons.
The
OPFMD has further requested that preference be given to the affected
families when selecting candidates for jobs, home loans and land
aid. The OPFMD has also requested that arrangements be made to look
into and help improve the health conditions of tortured youth.
These
requests were made by the organization as it prepares to mark World
Human Rights Day on December 10 in Kataragama. On this occasion,
the organisation will remember the first 'Pada Yatra' from Colombo
to Kataragama by the victimised families who made the journey at
a time when their plight was ignored by the then government. |
