Indian
guru in five-star sex trap for wealthy women
By Chris Kamalendran
An Indian astrologer who claimed he could see the
future without horoscopes and the like apparently did not foresee
what was in store for him -- 6 days in a remand cell for alleged
sexual abuse of his clients.
Swamiji
Kishore Shastri was portrayed in front-page newspaper advertisements
as "India's famous astrologer" who had arrived in Colombo
to solve problems of men and women. This was by "seeing face
and photo with very positive results without horoscope," said
the advertisements.
Instead
the Kompanna Veediya Police yesterday arrested the Swamiji for sexually
abusing his unsuspecting clients. It followed a string of complaints
from those who consulted the soothsayer to solve their problems.
Police
yesterday pieced together his modus operandi. Telephone callers
were given an appointment. When the clients called over at a popular
city apartment hotel, they were required to pay an initial fee of
Rs 1,200. Thereafter, an "astrological consultation" was
fixed in a city five star hotel for fees ranging from Rs 10,000
to Rs 200,000 depending on the income of the clients.
Some
of the female clients called over at the hotel accompanied by relatives
or friends. The Swamiji would ask them to move out of the room.
He would also direct his two translators to withdraw. Thereafter,
Police said, he would begin a ritual by rubbing two limes on the
navel of the female clients and try to sexually abuse them. Among
those whom the Swamiji had allegedly tried to abuse sexually have
been a gem merchant's wife, an Army officer's wife and several other
wealthy women.
Police
said they used a female decoy, a police constable, to seek astrological
advice. The Swamiji had asked those who accompanied her to withdraw.
Thereafter, he had told his translators to move out and tried to
molest the decoy. She raised cries and soon the Police swooped down
on the man who claimed he was one of India's most "famous astrologers."
Police raided the astrologer's room in the apartment hotel after
a string of complaints. The Swamiji was remanded by the Colombo
Fort acting Magistrate Deemani Baddewela yesterday. |
