UNP
moves to expel Bogollagama
The UNP is moving for the expulsion from parliament of its one-time
frontliner Rohitha Bogollagama, who crossed over recently and was
sworn in as Minister of Advanced Technology and National Enterprise
Development.
A
letter to this effect has been sent to Parliamentary Secretary General
Priyani Wijesekara on the grounds that he has been sacked from the
party and according to the constitution the party has the right
to nominate the next on the Kurunegala district list to replace
him as an MP. In line for this is Sarath Munasinghe, former military
spokesman and later Deputy Speaker.
UNP
Deputy General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said Mr. Bogollagama had
violated party discipline by crossing over and thus could be expelled.
Under the constitution, Mr. Bogollagama could appeal to the Supreme
Court within three months and the decision of the court will be
binding.
Meanwhile
the UNP is also considering disciplinary action against parliamentarians
T. Maheshwaran and P. Radhakrishnan who on Friday defied a party
decision and voted against the allocations for the Foreign Ministry.
The UNP had decided to abstain from voting. |
