teams expected at Mercantile Netball

The Mercantile Amateur Athletic Association (Netball
Section) has finalized all plans to hold the Mercantile League Netball
Tournament 2004 scheduled to be held on December 11 and 12 at the
BRC grounds.
The
tournament will again be sponsored by Mason's Mixture Ltd along
with Nippon Paints (Singapore) Co Pvt Ltd. Masons Mixture will be
sponsoring this event for the 14th successive year. The media sponsors
for the event are Daily Mirror and The Sunday Times.
Mason's
Mixture who will be celebrating their 75th year of existence ties
up with Nippon Paints for the first time who will be celebrating
their 125th next year, in sponsoring this much looked forward to
event under a combined banner.
The
organizers are expecting around 30 teams to participate from various
mercantile sectors in the A, B and C categories. They have already
received over 15 entries. Apart from the main championship the organizers
will be conducting a mixed division championship, which will be
held concurrently. Last year’s champions Hatton National Bank
will go all out to defend their title this year too but they will
face stiff opposition from Air Force and Arpico. Air Force was the
runners up in the Open event while Arpico were the Plate champions
last year.
Hatton
National Bank who is also the defending champions in the mixed division
are favourites to lift the title again. Dainichi were the winners
of the Division 'C' while Reckitts & Colman was the runner up.At
the conclusion of the tournament individual awards will be presented
to the best centre, best defence, best shooter, best male player
and the netball queen which were won by Arunika Karawitage of Ceylinco,
K.N. Dilrukshi of HNB, Neluka Priyadharshani of Arpico, Gayan Meedeniya
and Sashika Amarasinghe of HNB.
The
events which get underway on December 11 and 12 may go on for two
afternoon sessions during the two days, and the finals are due to
be held on January 6 2005 at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium with
special guests from Sri Lanka and Singapore gracing the Olympic
standard closing ceremony. |
