Arjuna,
Brendon provide fireworks
By Bernie Wijesekera
Former Sri Lanka stalwarts Arjuna Ranatunga 43 with
(2 sixes and four fours) and Brendon Kuruppu 41 (with a six and
3 fours) batting in their own inimitable style helped Old Anandians
to outplay Old Mahindians in their quarter final match in the sixth
annual Sir Henry Steel Olcott Memorial 15-overs-a-side tournament,
at NCC grounds, yesterday.
This
tournament was started in 1999 by the Old Mahindians SC through
the efforts of its former president Bandula Warnapura to bring about
understanding and togetherness among the Buddhist schools in honour
of a pioneer educationist who did much to upliftment of Buddhist
education.
This
year's tournament is being organized by the Old Anandians SC. Last
year OASC were joint champions with Dharmasoka Ambalangoda. Last
year's joint champions Dharmasoka too made their presence felt.
In their game against Rahula they proved their prowess by making
short work of the latter. In reply to Dharmasoka's total of 131,
the Matara team could only muster a mere 39.
In
the last match of the day, Old Palians kept their heads steady in
the fading light to beat the much fancied Nalanda outfit by fourteen
runs. In the two plate semi-finals Old Nalandians will meet the
Rahula while the Old Rajans will meet the old boys of Mahinda.
In
the Cup semi-finals the Old Anandians will meet the Old Devans while
the Old Sokians will meet the Old Palians.
