The inaugural under-14 cricket tournament organized
by Colombo Cricket Club, for coaching schools and Academies for
the Nelson Mendis Trophy will be held from 13th to 23rd of December.
This will be the first time that a tournament of this nature will
be staged in Sri Lanka. The Sunday Times spoke to some of the coaches
whose teams will be participating in this tournament on what they
thought about this event:
Hemantha
Devapriya the coach of Devas Cricket Academy said " I think
it's a good opportunity for players to display their skills, especially
the players from private schools who get limited exposure. It would
also give the coaches who have put in a lot of hard work to coach
these youngsters, to see them perform in real game situations".
Asoka
de Silva the coach of Asoka de Silva School of cricket said"
It would give the youngster very good exposure, and would also be
the ideal opportunity for players who do not get a chance to represent
their school teams to improve their skills, it would also be a good
experience for these youngsters to play against foreign teams".
Basil
Perera coordinator for Joes School of cricket said "It’s
an excellent opportunity for the players to gain international exposure
at such a young age, where in the past a player would have to wait
to make it to the under-19 national team to play against a foreign
team, it would also be a good opportunity for the youngsters to
enhance their cricketing skills" .
Anton
Siovin the coach of combined Schools team Bangalore said "
I think it is a great opportunity for the young cricketers to not
only develop their cricketing skills, but human qualities by learning
to interact and play against players from different Countries and
cultures. Nelson Mendis and his committee have done a fantastic
job in organizing this tournament, and have no doubt the tournament
will be a great success." |
