Pension
call for migrant workers
Some 1.5 million Sri Lankan migrant workers have returned to the
country after serving abroad during the last 25 years, many of whom
are feeble and worn-out with no income or welfare support, the Migrant
Workers Centre (MWC) said last week.
In
a statement to mark International Migrant Day Celebrations, the
MWC urged the government to introduce a pension scheme for these
workers. The centre, which has been helping migrant workers and
campaigning for their rights, repeated a call for migrant workers
serving overseas to be given the right to absentee voting at elections
and also asked the authorities to consider them, as well as those
in employment and those who've returned for a social security scheme.
