JVP
admits meeting US Ambassador
The Marxist JVP this week admitted that they have met the US Ambassador
in Sri Lanka - contrary to to a previous decision not to meet with
the Americans - where they have stated their position on the peace
process.
The
Sunday Times learns that it was their leader Somawansa Amarasinghe
who led the JVP delegation for the meeting. The JVP explained its
position to the US as well as the Japanese Ambassadors regarding
the peace process and that they was ready for talks, but 'not on
the basis of the LTTE's ISGA' proposals.
The
JVP reacting to a statement by the Donor co-chairs said they had
explained the position in what they called 'extensive and extremely
cordial discussions with the US, and Japanese Ambassadors'.
'We
also pointed out the need for democracy and human rights in the
North and East, the LTTE operating as a fascist dictatorship, is
completely at variance with the democratic reality and ideals of
the US, Japan and the EU', the JVP response said.
Earlier
the co-chairs had expressed 'deep concern' on what they called 'the
ongoing JVP-led actions against the peace process and Norway's efforts
as facilitator'.
"The
representatives expressed bewilderment that a member party of the
UPFA could engage in such a campaign in absolute contradiction to
the clearly stated position of the President and the Government
that they endorse and support the Norwegian role", the statement
by the co-chairs said. |
