Anura:
Parliament to be strengthened
Minister Anura Bandaranaike declared yesterday powers of Parliament
should be strengthened, instead of the present executive Presidential
system.
Addressing
a meeting at the Kurunegala town hall, Mr. Bandaranaike said that
as part of a programme to strengthen parliament, the government
hoped to introduce electoral reforms by which 50 percent of the
legislature would be elected on a first-past-the post system while
the other half would be elected on a proportional representation
basis.
Mr.
Bandaranaike said SLFP members had no right to complain about the
JVP, without correcting their own mistakes. He said it was an accepted
fact that the JVP had turned to be the third force in the country
and the JVP had the right to express itself. |
