Children
of Cancer Hospital are treated to soothing carols
Healing melodies
By Marisa de Silva
'Tis the season of good cheer. When people come together
to do something nice for others, it brings a bright glow into your
heart. And when children share their talents to bring joy to other
kids who are unable to afford even the simple joys of life, words
cannot express the sense of warmth that creeps into your heart…
'Strings
by the Sea' and a few members of the Colombo Catholic Youth Choir
(CCYC) visited the Maharagama Cancer Hospital's Children's Ward
on December 12. The intent gaze of the young patients, seated, being-carried
or standing was transfixed on the little group of young violinists,
each with a Santa cap perched on his/her head, playing popular Christmas
tunes.
The
group, on their part were happy to have had the opportunity to share
some of the Christmas spirit yet saddened by the plight of young
patients. "They saw the suffering of others," said a parent
of two daughters who are a part of the group. “It helps us
be more sensitive to needs other than your own,” said another
young performer. As the programme drew to a close, one of the visiting
youngsters gave a poignant explanation of the intent behind their
mission.
She
spoke of the trappings of the season; the decorations, gifts and
other superficial frivolities and how they did not signify the importance
of Christmas. She explained the true meaning of Christmas and then
asked each of them to say a prayer according to their religious
beliefs to ask for strength and courage to face difficult times. |
