RMV
out of licences, issues temporary ones
The Motor Traffic Department has suspended issuing the card-type
driving license until a new card is designed as the previous contract
had lapsed, Registrar of Motor Vehicles, B. Wijeratne said.
The
new card is in the process of being designed by a Cabinet appointed
Technical Evaluation Committee is likely to be ready by June, Mr.
Wijeratne said. He said the contract had lapsed in September, but
with Cabinet approval it had been extended to December 31.
He
said they had requested the Government Printer to print temporary
eight-page booklets to be issued until the cards were ready. "The
new card will include several security features and more details
about the holder," the Registrar added.
He
said the Police could also easily decode the information on the
card by using a special instrument provided to them. Mr. Wijeratne
said that since January 3 they had received about 5,000 applications
and that all of them would be issued with the temporary licences
which would be ready by next week. |
