East
faces cyclone and tidal waves
By Asif Fuard
Tidal waves of up to three or four metres may hit
the east coast due to a cyclonic storm developing in the Bay of
Bengal, the Meteorological Department warned yesterday.
Operations
Director K. R. Abeysinghe said a depression in the Bay of Bengal
was triggering the cyclonic storm some 550 kilometres from Pottuvil.
He said the sea in the east and southern coast was rough and thundershowers
were also likely.
"I
would advise the public not to go to the Eastern coast sea area
because the weather is unpredictable. As of now we don't know the
direction the storm will be heading but it is advancing towards
the East coast," Mr. Abeysinghe said.
He
said the exact speed of the cyclone was not known but it could cause
strong winds, flooding or even tidal waves along the east coast.
"I
can only advise people to be prepared for whatever circumstance.
Everyone along the east coast should also have an emergency kit
that consists of a battery-operated radio, torch, first aid and
clean water. The present weather is very unpredictable," he
said. |
