Prabha
to show up for Peterson – LTTE
By Frances Bulathsinhala
LTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran is to meet Norwegian
Foreign Minister Jan Peterson and International Development Minister
Hilde F. Johnson, LTTE's Peace Secretariat Chief S. Puleedevan said
yesterday.
"Our
leader will raise humanitarian issues pertaining to the disaster
which has heavily affected the north east and protest against military
involvement in relief work in the northeast," Mr. Puleedevan
told The Sunday Times while dismissing as nonsense the continuing
speculation about Mr. Prabhakaran's death.
The
LTTE leader's meeting with the Norwegians will be his first public
appearance since the State radio SLBC reported on January 8 that
the elusive Tiger chief had been killed in the tsunami disaster.
The SLBC later retracted its report.
The
Norwegian embassy in Colombo yesterday confirmed the visit of the
two ministers, but made no reference to a meeting with Mr. Prabhakaran.
The
embassy said Mr. Peterson and Mr. Johnson would be in Sri Lanka
from January 20 to 23 and would visit areas like Hambantota and
Mullaitivu for a first hand assessment of the post-tsunami situation.
The
Norwegian government has granted US$ 183 million to the tsunami-devastated
countries and has named Sri Lanka as a major recipient. Deputy Foreign
Minister Vidar Helgesen and Special Adviser Erik Solheim will also
join the two ministers. |
