Cold comfort from top brass
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) visited the tsunami-affected areas in the Trincomalee district recently. But what his subordinates got was not the kind of moral support they had expected. During his stops in Kinniya, Mutur and Kuchchaveli, the IGP was more interested in knowing from some policemen who were putting up a shed to house themselves while they were engaged in clean up work in Mutur as to who was paying for the materials used for the construction.

When he moved to Kuchchaveli where the entire police station was almost washed away by the tsunami, he did not have a sympathetic ear for his men who told him that the disaster had happened just days after they had got their monthly salary and asked for his intervention to make amends. But no such luck for them. Instead the IGP asked that they seek a commendation from the DIG of the area instead.

Interesting non-encounter
Two top JVP members Tilvin Silva and Wimal Weerawansa visited Arugam Bay area last week. Just ten minutes before they arrived there, a group of LTTE women cadres were frequenting the area.

This caught the attention of the STF personnel on duty in the area but there was little cause for concern as the LTTE cadres left before the JVP men arrived on the scene. It would have been an interesting meeting if the two sides had actually met.
