Finding
homes for disaster-hit orphans
By Apsara Kapukotuwa
With an estimated 1000 children orphaned due to the
tsunami, the focus of the authorities has fallen on giving priority
to the placement of these children in environments familiar to them.
Living
in refugee camps with relatives, these orphans are the worst hit
of the three categories of children classified in tsunami-hit areas.
The other categories consist of children who have lost one parent
and those who have been traumatised by their experiences.
Probation
and Child Care Services Commissioner Sarath Abeygunewardene says
that even in the case of adoption by either local or foreign interested
parties, priority lies in rehabilitating children in their own familiar
environment or extended family set-up. |
