Mathews
sends Royal reeling
Royal College gave a pathetic batting performance as they were outplayed
and outclassed by St. Joseph's by an innings and 14 runs on day
two at Darley Road yesterday. It was all over by 3.45 p.m. The Joes
had the same result last year too.
The
unbeaten Joes capably led by wicket-keeper Batsman Harshan Gunatilleke
churned out their sixth successive win for the season. Earlier they
beat Taxila MV, Harischandra M.V. (emerging schools), D.S. Senanayake,
St. Benedict's, Maris Stella and now Royal to maintain their winning
streak. The architect of this win was lanky paceman Angelo Mathews
who finished with a match bag of 10 for 81.
Royal
winning the toss elected to bat first. Mathews bowling with vim
and vigour wrought havoc figures of 7 for 51 to see Royal all out
for 139. The pitch had much fire early part of the innings, but
indifferent batting caused the Royal downfall.
The
Joes replied with 260 for 9 before they declared before tea. Royal
in reply were sitting on a bed of nails at tea 104 for 7 - finally
folded up for 107. Feroze Ahmed (30) who came in at No. 3 slot batted
doggedly was last man out.
The
Royal - Ananda College schools played for the late L.D.S. Peiris
Memorial Trophy which was scheduled for Thursday 27 and 28 Friday
and Saturday said the Master-in-charge of Royal Sarath Karunaratne.
He
said it was brought forward on a request made by Ananda but now
will be played on the scheduled date. The L.D.S. Peiris Memorial
Trophy is much took forward to and played for the 3rd successive
year. |
