UN
snaps back
NEW YORK: The Sri Lanka government diplomatically steered UN Secretary-General
Kofi Annan away from LTTE-controlled Mulliativu during his recent
visit to Sri Lanka. But within its own precincts, the UN has obviously
upstaged the Sri Lankan government.
In
the UN bulletin board that displays photographs of visits by senior
UN officials to the world's trouble spots, the focus this week is
on Sri Lanka.
But
of the 12 photographs on display, showing death and destruction,
10 are shots of Mullaitivu and one shot each of Jaffna and Point
Pedro. Whatever happened to all the death and destruction in the
south? Were the pictures of LTTE-controlled territory politically
motivated by the big wigs at the UN or was it just plain dumb? |
