Two
undergrads take university rowing to new heights
By S.R. Pathiravithana
Gayan Kaushalya and Mihiruk Kottehewa were not brought
up in a rowing environment, but in spite of that fact the two youngsters
created undergrad history when they became the first pair to bring
home a trophy from a foreign competition from this water sport.
The
duo who took part in the Singapore Pools Rowing Championship 2005
won one event, finished as runners-up in another while taking the
fourth place in the third.
In
this annual rowing international there were two teams from Singapore,
and one each from Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Sri Lanka.
Kaushalya
an old boy of D.S. Senanayake College and Kottehewa an old boy of
Royal College (he did not take part in rowing while at school) previously
have done well in local meets and especially at the inter-university
rowing competitions. They are under the tutelage of former national
coach Lloyd Sirimanne.
At
the Singapore Pools meet Kottehewa was placed second in the Lightweight
Men's Double Sculls Open losing to Saad Nurzuhairi of Malaysia.
Then in the Men Double Sculls School/Tertiary event the duo was
placed first beating Harry Lee and Tan Yong Wei of Hong Kong who
took the second place. In the Lightweight Men Single Scull Open
Gayan Kaushalya was placed fourth. |
