non-academic staff set to resume strike
The Inter University Trade Unions Joint Commission (IUTUJC) has
given a 17-day deadline to the government to rectify the salary
anomalies of non-academic staff, failing which the strike called
off temporarily last year would be resumed.
The
strike was called off in September last year as government had agreed
to issue a circular by December 15, effective from January 2005,
rectifying the salary anomalies while paying a monthly allowance
of Rs. 1000 till then. The allowance had been discontinued by December
15 but the circular was never issued.
The
committee comprising Ministers Dinesh Gunawardena and K. D. Lalkantha
is reported to be delaying the matter using the tsunami disaster
as an excuse. "We waited for sometime as we decided on our
own to contribute to the tsunami victims. But now it's time enough.
We informed all the authorities concerned of our proposed action
unless the issue is resolved." IUTUJC president Lionel Malwatte
told The Sunday Times.
The
salary anomalies were to be rectified from 1997 in line with the
recommendations of the Tissa Devendra Salaries Commission. Though
the anomalies of the academic staff were rectified in 2000 and arrears
paid for the 3 years, the non-academic staff salary anomalies were
not.
"We
were agreeable to the anomaly issue being rectified from 2000, forgetting
about arrears from 1997. The authorities had agreed to rectify the
salaries of the lowest grade of non-academic staff, such as labourers
and drivers and then deal with the other grades saying only Rs.
5 million was available to pay the increased amounts." Mr.
Malwatte said. |
