Shantha Kalawitigoda and Gayan
Wijekoon put North Central Province in a strong position at the
end of the first day's play against Southern Province in their Inter-Provincial
cricket tournament match played at the Dambulla Stadium yesterday.
With
their pacemen Nuwan Kulasekera and Farveez Maharoof wrecking the
Southern Province batting for a meagre 86. Kalawitigoda and Wijekoon
then frustrated them when they went on a leather hunt to put on
an unbroken 205 stand for the second wicket to give their side a
healthy score of 251 for 1. Kalawitigoda remained unbeaten on 126
inclusive of 19 boundaries and three sixers while Wijekoon made
78 with 12 boundaries.
Southern
Province 86 in 22.2 overs (Anushka Polonowita 28, Saman Jayantha

Nuwan
Zoysa and Ruchira Perera send WP reeling
Hostile bowling by Central Province pace duo Nuwan Zoysa and Ruchira
Perera sent the Western Province side reeling to 43 on the first
day of the Inter-Provincial cricket tournament match played at the
SSC grounds.
It
was a pathetic display by the batsmen of Western Province who won
the toss and decided to take first lease of the wicket. However
they were in trouble soon as they lost four wickets for just 14
runs on the board.
They
never recovered from this shock and lost two more wickets at the
same score and then slid to 39 for 9 and ultimately being bowled
for just 43 which took them 23 overs. Zoysa ended with figures of
6 for 12 while Perera finished with 4 for 21.
Central
Province in their turn too cannot be happy with their batting as
they were able to muster only 133 and Western Province in their
second essay were 32 for 1.
Western
Province 43 in 23 overs (Chaminda Vaas 15.; Nuwan Zoysa 6 for 12,
Ruchira Perera 4 for 21) and 32 for 1 at close
Central Province 133 in 47.5 overs (Dhammika Sudharshana 26, Thilan
Samaraweera 27, Sajith Fernando 18, Bhatiya Perera 19, Thilina Kandamby
17.; Chaminda Vaas 3 for 27, Thilan Mirando 3 for 32, Dinuk Hettiarachchi
3 for 22). |
