Drug
under investigation for adverse reaction
By Apsara Kapukotuwa
The adverse reaction shown by children towards the
antibiotic 'cefotaxime' has prompted medical authorities to order
an investigation into the drug's properties.
Belonging
to a group of antibiotics called cephalosporins, 'cefotaxime' kills
bacteria and is given in the form of injections or infusions. According
to the Director, Medical Supplies Division, Dr. B.V.S.H. Beneragama,
the only complaint received so far has been from the Ratnapura Hospital
paediatric ward.
Dr.
Beneragama said instructions have been given to release a different
batch of the same drug to the other wards of the hospital since
no complaints have been forthcoming from its use there. The matter
has also to be brought to the notice of the adverse drug reaction-monitoring
unit of the Colombo Medical Faculty and the Director of Medical
Technology.
Dr.
Saman Abeywardhana of the Ratnapura Hospital paediatric ward, began
making complaints last year of his patients suffering fainting spells
with the administration of this drug. The matter came to a head
this week when one of his patients collapsed and had to be resuscitated.
Since
he had already asked for the intervention of the Ratnapura Hospital
Medical Superintendent and made his comments on the affected patients'
bed head tickets, he entered an official complaint as well. The
move finally brought results with the hospital deciding to stop
using the injection till the Medical Supplies Division gave a safety
clearance.
Sources
say the same adverse effects on children had been reported from
Chilaw, Avissawella and Embilipitiya hospitals. |
