Bandula
Weerasinghe on song at Ridgeways
172 enthusiasts entered the fray in stroke play at the Ridgeways
on Saturday. It was a record number of entries and the well preserved
course took a helluva massive beating.
In
the "A" Division Classic that amiable massive man Bandula
Weerasinghe was in total command from the first tee shot. Calculating
and methodical Bandula was most times pretty straight and when he
strayed he recorded admirably. Playing off handicap eight he chained
together a great nett 66 to pick victory, much applause and rush
to an open house hurriedly put together by doting better half Nilika
who has just recently picked up the golfing bug. That man again
Sheron Fernando on 6 handicap played another exceptional round to
settle for nett 68 and be beaten by another steady and economical
player C. Twerenbold. Sanjeewa Wickremanayake and Sarath Wickremaratne
messed around on nett 84 each.
Hamza
in Style
The late Alavi Macan Markar the elegant left hander's
offspring Hamza Macan Markar came good once again. A strikingly
attractive batsman in his early youth he plays golf in the same
style. Flamboyant and a trifle reckless he put his game together
well to settle for nett 69 and beat another good performer Tae Hwan
Kim with a better rear nine.
Hamza
a glutton for celebrating had good reasons to create a partnership
with Carlsberg.
A.H.
Sherrifdeen a rare stylist played safe with method and came good
to tie with Macan Markar and Hwan Kim but most unfortunately lost
his place as his rear nine was inadequate. Shiran de Soysa, Kumar
Boralessa and Mohan Ratnayake impressed considerably with nett 70
each and then Suhayb Sangani and Hemal Fernando ended at peace with
the course when they got all square at the 18th. Mohan Ratnayake
had the lowest gross score in Division 'B'. S.M.A. Hameed and A.D.S.
Gunasekera cracked 2 good looking earth moving centuries while Avinash
Nareshkumar, Nimal Fernando, Rohan Perera and Uncle Willie Barsenbach
were 4 of the few who produced confetti.
Imm
Impresses
S.O. Imm was in great form. 'It is my best day in golf
and I am very happy' he volunteered at the end of a rewarding day.
He had the lowest gross score in Division "C" and the
lowest nett for the day.
Coming
behind Aravind Fernando, Fazal Hameed and S. Unamboowe tied on nett
68 each with Aravind Fernando getting ahead to 2nd place on a count
back. Dhayan Peiris, D. Ratnayake, A.I. Gooneratne and Caesar Fernando
impressed with good scores of nett 69 each.
There
was a massive collection of messy centuries and a few of those who
raised hell were David Webb, Sheron Fernando, Elmo de Silva, Tony
Nadaraja, Lal Wickrematunga and Peter Cook. The confetti production
line ran weak with only Ajantha Mylvaganam and Sugath Wickremasinghe
contributing.
Seniors
Dhammika Ratnayake came good with an excellent nett 69.
He had a great collection of pals round him at the 19th in a fun
filled spree. Frank Weeraratne continues to knock at the door and
this time he had slight response which he richly deserved. A.H.
Sherifdeen the crafty and miserly man with his strokes was beaten
by one stroke by steady and ready C. Twerenbold in the Masters.
