Strikers keep Astro abound

Lightning fast action and super quick reflexes by Sri Lanka's premier hockey talent kept spectators at the The Pioneer & Bacon Cup Knock out Hockey Tournament on their toes yesterday. The tournament, which was organized by the Colombo Hockey Association was played off between a number of prominent teams at the Astro Turf, Reid Avenue. The first round and semi final matches, which were worked off yesterday, were dominated by the Sri Lanka Air Force, who won both their league matches by convincing margins. In the Pioneer Cup 'A' Division, the SLAF Seniors ousted the Royal Hockey Club 8 - 2 and moved on to face CH&FC 'A' later in the evening.

The other 'A' Division match-up, played between the Army and BRC ended in a narrow win for Army. The game ended 3 - 1 in favour of the forces team. The match, being a semi-final, put Army head to head against the winner of the CH&FC vs Air Force match later last evening. The 'A' division final will be played at 4.30 pm this evening at the Astro Turf. In the Bacon Cup 'B' division it was once again the Air Force lads who shone, beating the Old Peterites Hockey team by six goals to nil. Right Extreme U.C.S Silva did well to score a hat trick at this match.

They thus progressed to their 'B' division semi final where they will meet the Old Thomians today at 10.30am. The 'B' division match between CH & FC and KDA was won by CH & FC with a tally of 5 to 1. The Old Anandians vs Colts match ended in a 3 -1 win in favour of the Old Anandians. The match-up between CH & FC and the Old Anandians will be played today at 12 noon.

The 'A' division final will be held at 4.30pm today while the 'B' division final will be held at 3.00pm. The semi finals will begin at 9:00am.
