You’ve just finished a grand meal with family or friends. But to make it a real treat, a dessert has to complement. So find out what Ishani Ranasinghe has to say about mouth watering desserts and the recipes you can try at home

Desserts are the grand finale to any meal. In my case, I’d rather have the dessert than the meal itself. Dinner is dinner, but desserts are something to be relished!

It’s a known fact that we all love sweets, and no matter what anyone says chocolate is the best therapy for anything and everything. When it comes to desserts the choice you have is endless and just like anyone I have a list of my own favourites that gets my mouth watering when I think about it….Double and triple chocolate concoctions. Seductive multi-layered crème brulees. Cake layers piled high with dense fillings resting in pools of exquisite sauces. They’re everywhere – upscale restaurants, hotels, bistros, coffee bars, bakeries, and bookstore cafes.

Most of us have certainly become concerned with our health and fitness. But no matter how strong people’s obsession with fitness and health is, desserts have not gone away. Wondering who really eats all this? Well certainly more people than anyone really thinks.

Since pastry chefs are baking up original desserts that extend the boundaries far beyond the usual repertory of pies, cakes, puddings and ice creams, desserts suddenly are not just closing the show, they’re stealing it.

Therefore, here is a list of some yummy desserts that have become the all time favourites of people… and where you can get them. Just in case you are one of those people with the golden touch for cooking, the menus will become handy.

Most mousse lovers will always remember where the best mousse is served- Raffles, Hilton, Mackys and Deli Market and chances are you will end up going back for more.

For some it’s the cheesecake with a variety of toppings to choose from – blueberry, strawberry… the list is endless. While many of them concur that it is quite fattening, they just rave about its taste. To put it in the word of one cheesecake lover, “it’s so creamy but a bit sour… and the fruit topping is like heaven.” So where can you get some great desserts like this well almost anywhere. Raffles, Barristas, Hitlon, Colombo Plaza… it is quite a popular dessert.

While Tiramisu might not be on everyone’s list, it certainly is a favourite among many with layers of sponge cake and coffee flavour similar to cheese cake. Elaborate, complicated desserts aside, there is one dessert anyone can just whip up, as it is so easy to make and definitely really yummy and popular. Waffles and ice cream! It’s so simple... a waffle with a scoop of ice cream, heaps of chocolate sauce and a few nuts. As to where to get it from - anywhere! (Waffler’s are the specialist in this, for sure)

Loads of dessert... Now that surely is heaven.
