Malaysia
sends back Lankan illegals
More than 800 Sri Lankan illegal immigrants were repatriated from
Malaysia during a recent amnesty which ended this month, allowing
illegal immigrants to report to their respective embassies in Malaysia.
The
total number repatriated were 833 illegal immigrants with the Foreign
Ministry saying only 13 more were awaiting repatriation. There were
no Sri Lankans among the illegal immigrants arrested and sentenced
to jail and whipping by the Malaysian authorities recently.
Malaysian
media reported on Tuesday that dozens of illegal immigrants arrested
early this month in a nationwide crackdown are to be jailed and
whipped.
A Malaysian
court had sentenced 57 Indonesian illegal immigrants to be jailed
for up to three months with 16 of them to be whipped once, after
the nationwide blitz on March 1 to weed out illegal immigrants.
According to the reports, Malaysia estimates there were nearly a
million illegal workers in the country, mostly from Indonesia but
also from the Philippines, Myanmar, Bangladesh, India and Sri Lanka.
