Undergrads
warn of stern action
By Sachitra Mahendra
University students have warned top education authorities
of sterner action along with university dons, school teachers, educationists
and other intellectuals, unless the present moves to introduce education
reforms are reversed.
Members
of the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) last Thursday
marched to the University Grants Commission offices in Colombo and
handed over a letter to the UGC chairman requesting him to discontinue
the present 'destructive moves in education'. The letter was expected
to be handed over to President Chandrika Kumaratunga, who is also
the Education Minister.
As
for the other demands, more time would be give for them to be met,
he said. The letter handed over to the UGC dealt with the issue
of the setting up of private universities, de-linking the A/L exam
from university admissions, liberalizing of A/L subjects, multiple
text books and police acts of violence against protesting university
students.
Meanwhile,
Sri Jayewardenapura University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Chandima Wijebandara
told The Sunday Times that education institutes should be set up
to conduct courses and not to hold examinations or award degrees.
