SLMC
kept in the dark on JM: Party secretary
By Frances Bulathsinghala
The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress yesterday alleged the government after
keeping them in virtual darkness was now trying to sell it the controversial
joint mechanism agreement.
The
SLMC urged the government to clarify its statements that the peace
process could be linked to the proposed agreement with the LTTE.
"It is only now the government is trying to sell us the draft
they have already made prepared", SLMC Secretary General Hassan
Ali told The Sunday Times.
He
described President Kumaratunga's meeting last week with SLMC leader
Rauff Hakeem and Minister Farial Ashraff, to obtain their views
on the joint mechanism as 'something close to an ultimatum'.
"All
this after we were kept out. No one asked us for our opinion. They
have begun consulting us only now. Even now we have not been told
of the structure of the proposed agreement.
“We
have merely been promised a look at the draft of the agreement",
a disgruntled Mr. Ali said. Mr. Hakeem was not available for comment.
