ISSM
embarks on new course
By Dhanuusha Pathirana
A Modular Learning System was introduced by the Institute of Supply
and Materials Management (ISMM) in collaboration with the International
Trade Centre (ITC) at the ISMM premises yesterday.
"The
Institution's aim is to foster the professional development of Purchasing
and Supply Chain Management in Sri Lanka. Most of the organisations
have failed since they have no knowledge about the Supply Chain.
If a certain organisation only keeps a track of what they are selling
and disregard what the customer really requires, the rate of profits
will come down. Therefore it is a must for commercial organisations
to understand the Purchasing and Supply Chain," ITC Learning
Systems Officer, Margareta Funder said.
"Sixty
percent of the tsunami aid which came to Sri Lanka were materials.
To distribute and manage this we need qualified purchasing and supply
professionals. Since our country lacks such persons the aid has
been misused," ISMM's Training Director Brigadier T.R. Jayasinghe
said,
When
The Sunday Times inquired whether the IMMS and the ITC made an effort
to implement this new module in Government universities, ISMM Post
Director and Council Member Nimal Gonaduwa said they had discussed
the matter with the Open Universities two years ago and that however
the decision was still on hold.
"The
Open University's Management Department officials said they were
disinclined to approve funds. So far the responses have been negative,"
Mr. Gonaduwa said.
Ms.
Margareta Funder said they had not yet contacted any Government
to implement this Module in their Educational System. "We have
only contacted institutes providing training on Material Management.
But if any Government is willing to negotiate we will grant our
support," she added.
The
Diploma Course will commence on May 21 at the Institute of Supply
and Materials Management. The Swedish Government funded the course
through the ITC. Vice Presidents of the ISMM Anil Ponweera and Chandima
Jayatillake were also present. |
