Tuhashini
leads Sri Lanka to SAARC title

Sri Lanka Women's golfers led by a brilliant individual effort by
Tuhashini Selvaratnam (73, 74) helped Sri Lanka, to beat India by
19 strokes to retain the coveted SAARC title at Digana yesterday.
Sri
Lanka on the 1st day had 161. India 171. Nepal 214. In the second
round Sri Lanka finished with 155. India 164. Nepal 224. On the
overall results Sri Lanka beat India by 19 strokes to retain the
title. India's Neha Majhitha finished her two rounds with 84 and
83.
Twenty
- eight-year old Selvaratnam who is working with the Arizona Golf
Association (USA) said she came to Sri Lanka to play in the 7th
SAARC Golf Championship and was proud that she was able to help
the country to retain the title. She also thanked Jackie Dias for
her contribution in this effort.
In
2004 Jackie Dias and Kishani Vethavinayagam, won the title defeating
Pakistan held in Pakistan. Meanwhile in the men's event Defending
champions Pakistan sneaked into the final edging out Sri Lanka on
a count-back. India with a 2-day total of 300 topped to qualify.
In
a very tight finish Pakistan and Sri Lanka tied for second place
on day two -with identical totals of 308. Pakistan's third player
Vaqas Ahmed with a 78 nudged out Sri Lanka's captain Prabaqaran
who finished on 79. The final between India -Pakistan will be played
today at 8.00 a.m. Six nations are in the fray with Maldives withdrawing.
