A
huge breakthrough for local rugby
At a recent meeting between the Qatar Rugby Federation, Rugby World
Cup - Dublin and Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU), it has been
decided that the Singer Sri Lankan Airlines Sevens - 2005 will serve
as a Qualifier for the 2006 Asian Games in Qatar. The 7th Singer
SriLankan Airlines Sevens will be the decider to select eight teams
which will contest for the Asian Games - 2006. This will be the
3rd time that Rugby has featured in the Asian Games. Under the rules
of the Asian Games Rugby will have its permanency in the future.
This is a huge breakthrough for Rugby which is trying to become
an Olympic Sport.
This
is a great recognition for the Singer Sri Lankan Airlines Sevens
as part of the IRB programme. The participating teams at this event
on the 9, 10 & 11 September 2005 in Kandy are as follows, Sri
Lanka, Arabian Gulf, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Guam, Japan,
Kazakhstan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Thailand.
Already Kazakhstan, Thailand, Korea, Chinese Taipei have confirmed
their participation.Twelve top school teams will also participate
at this years Singer Sri Lankan 7s. which will run concurrently
to the International event.
The
following teams have confirmed their participation Isipatana, Wesley,
St. Peters, St. Anthony's, St. Sylvester's, Vidyartha, Zahira and
Science College.Six International panel Referees along with a Referee
Manager and two Assessors, top local referees will do the honours
as judges for this tournament.Singer Sri Lanka Ltd & Sri Lankan
Airlines Ltd has come forward again to sponsor this event for the
7th consecutive year. - |
