Preferential
vote-snatchers warned
UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe this week slammed various Foundations
that have sprung up to steal votes from different electoral constituencies
in the intra-party battle for the preferential vote and said that
the party does not recognise them.
"
We don’t recognise these padanamas (Foundations)", he
told a gathering of party activists from the Maharagama electorate
during a meeting at UNP headquarters, Siri Kotha on Wednesday.
"The
only foundation the party recognises is the common Chanda Padanama
or vote base, he said in what appeared to be a reference to party
organisers with Foundations to their names making inroads for the
preference vote in constituencies other than those given to them.
Mr.
Wickremesinghe said the Maharagama constituency in particular was
like a jar of cashew nuts which everyone dipped his hands into,
with the result that Maharagama itself was deprived of representation
in Parliament. He said the Maharagama voters should not permit this
to happen and also said that if those who put their hands into this
jar with promises of jobs in a future UNP Government, that would
not be the case.
The
UNP Presidential candidate said that the rising cost of living,
political uncertainty and the fragile security situation required
a change in the political leadership in the country.
UNP
Maharagama organiser Irvin Weerackody also referred to the "auctioning
of votes " in his division, and called it a "plague."
He said there was little one could do about this other than to appeal
to the conscience of all concerned.
UNP Homagama organiser Bandula Gunawardena also spoke at the meeting.
