Navy
go down fighting to CH and CR outclass hapless Police
By Rangi Akbar
Kandy SC vs Army at Nittawela on August 30. CR vs CH on August 31.
This is the semi-final lineup of the Caltex Inter-Club knock-out
rugby tournament for the Clifford Cup after CH beat Navy 24-0 and
CR outclassed Police 41-8 in the quarter final games played at Police
Park and Longden Place respectively yesterday.
The
CH-Navy game turned out to be a closely contested affair. It was
only during the second half that CH managed to gain their points
after the teams crossed over after a blank scorecard. CH had an
early chance of getting ahead but the easy penalty was kicked astray
by Marso. R.W.A.C. Ranatunga and A.J.P. Indika gave CH several anxious
moments but they simply lacked the know-how to get past the CH defence.
CH
indulged in too much kicking in the first half. CH made up for their
lapses in the first half when Madipola barged over for a try mid
right which was converted by Nalin Dissanayake. CH took the lead
at 7-0.
CH’s
chance to go further ahead came when Milinda Jayasinghe crashed
over for an unconverted try. CH asserted themselves after this and
scored through Dilanjan (Bertie) Jayasekera and a few minutes later
Milinda Jayasinghe scored and Harshana Wijeweera was on target with
the conversion.

Police 41-8 after leading 13-3 at the breather. CR’s points
were made up of four goals, two tries and a penalty while Police’s
8 points came off a try and a penalty.
CR’s
penalty was put over by Pushpakumara and the tries were by Shamil
Mohammed, Naufer, Pushpakumara, Mushtaq anf Kishin Musafer. Pushpakumara
converted four of them. Police’s points were scored by Hettiarachchi.
