Higgs
wins ‘A’ Classic at Charity Golf
Bradman Weerakoon the President of the Ceylon Association for the
mentally Retarted was the Chief Guest at the Charity Golf Tournament
organized by enthusiasts and sympathizers, Tissa Wickremasinghe
and Mervyn Hettiaratchi supported by the Royal Colombo Golf Club.
The tournament, the Award ceremony and the Oriental Buffet dinner
combined to make a rousing success of a meticulously planned programme.
Mr.
Weerakoon in his eloquent speech said among other significant observations
“I am very happy to be here with people who share a passion
for sports and who are also sympathetic to the suffering of the
vulnerable and handicapped in our Society”. He was grateful
to receive almost a million rupees towards the worthy cause of support
for the Mentally handicapped.
Yanagihara
Outstanding
Playing in the ‘B’ Division K. Yanagihara produced several
patches of excellent golf. The putts came in superbly and off the
tee he was happy with gaining distance. Absolutely thrilled with
45 points, the highest for the day he beamed throughout the award
ceremony and collected loud applause. He was the overall winner
and picked a handsome trophy.
Sharp
Junior
Andrew Udeshi was quite impressive, showing much promise. He picked
41 points and the Junior Trophy beating Akil Rao who collected praiseworthy
39 points. Mrs. M.K. Hong was outstanding with 48 points beating
‘smiler’ Rani Brennan.
Higgs Takes Off
Edward Higgs of Cathay Pacific fame came good after a short dry
spell. Playing off 12 he struck good early in the round and remained
accurate off the fairways. Miserly with his strokes which he jealously
protected he came off with a good collection of 43 points to win
the ‘A’ Division classic and celebrate with pals through
the dinner. P.S. Kumara came 5 shots behind.
Lal
Shines
A seasoned all round sportsman of yesteryear Lal Wickrematunga is
still quite tender at the Ridgeways. Poya was his great day and
after paying his respects and getting a good rub of oil and blessings
he moved to the first tee and everything went right for him. He
swung bravely and fearlessly and went for the cup on the greens.
Amply rewarded and supported with a massive packet of strokes Lal
came good with 43 points and the ‘B’ Division trophy.
A glutton for celebrating he knocked down a few before he left for
home with the good news. D. Hettiaratchi was a good tidy 2nd with
41 points.
