It’s Western Province again

Western Province with 238 points emerged overall champions to retain the President’s Cup for another year at the 31st National Sports Festival 2005 concluded at the modernized Bernard Aluvihare Stadium in Matale yesterday.
North Western Province with 153 points finished second followed by Central Province with 142 and Southern Province with 117 securing third and fourth places respectively.

Over1500 sportsmen and women from the provinces including North Eastern Province participated in the three day National Sports Festival conducted by the Ministry of Sports. Only two records were established at the meet.
On the second day of the meet Gayan Perera of North Western Province established a new Sri Lanka record in the men’s Discus throw with a distance of 53.08 m.

R.K.A.P. Maduwanthi of North Western Province set up a new meet record in the women’s high jump event when she cleared the bar at 1.71 meters.
M.A. Shayamalee from the Sabaragamuwa Province and V.G.N. Tharanga of the Southern Province won the women’s and men’s 110metre hurdle events at the 31st National Sports Festival now in progress at the ‘modernised’ Bernard Aluvihare stadium in Matale, yesterday.

Out of the two winners Tharanga had a very impressive run when he left behind his opponents to win the event in only 14:63 secs while all the competitors clocked more than 15 seconds.
