Internationally acclaimed Aswesuma (The Compensation) fame director
Benette Ratnayake's second direction "Sulanga"-(The Wind)

Canada.

(yesterday) of the festival which is scheduled from August 27 to

maiden film won six international awards including the critics'
award at the Houston International Film Festival. Locally the film
won seven Sarasavi Awards including the Best Actress for Sangeetha
Weeraratne.
In
'Sulanga' the director narrates tales around four women from different
social backgrounds; an uneducated girl, a young girl who had passed
her Ordinary Level exam, a graduate and a professor. The film depicts
how different people react to an issue of love which is common and
universal. The film depicts that what each character was searching
for, happiness.
"My
attempt was to give a deep interpretation of how the mind works
once one gets attracted to another, the award winning filmmaker
said. "The theme is appealing to everyone. For there is no
one who has not experienced love at one or other stages of his or
her and the film contains at least a part of their stories. It is
connected to everybody's lives," Benette said describing his
latest direction.
Speaking
about the selection of the title 'Sulanga', the love and work of
heart cannot be seen but we feel how it operates just like 'the
wind'. At times the wind can be a gentle breeze and the same wind
the next instance could become a monstrous storm bringing disaster.
Similarly love and the human mind too could be like this.
The
film had been shot in location in and around Kandy, Polonnaruwa
and Colombo. The Story of 'Sulanga' A case has come before the Family
Court. Krishanthi is filing for divorce from her husband Senaratne,
a university professor, whom she met and married when she was an
undergraduate student. She is pregnant with their second child.
Krishanthi accuses her husband of having an affair with Kumari,
a younger woman.
Senarathe
claims she has misunderstood the whole situation and pleads with
her to keep the family together, Kumari is from a poor rural family.
Her mother struggled to bring her up in such a way that Kumari could
escape item from the poverty she was born into. Giving evidence
and under cross-examination each one of them narrates their version
of their life's search for happiness. They promise to tell the truth
but each one's truth is different. Truth means one thing in a Court
of Law. But what is Truth when it comes before the Court of the
Heart?
