tunes
The sounds of the thammattama, geta bera, dawula, yak bera will
once again blend in unique rhythm with the flute, to bring you the
fifth annual hewisi band concert, Perpetual Sounds, organised by
the hewisi band of S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia. Celebrating
their 25th anniversary last year, the band is back again in triumph
bringing you the hewisi band concert for the fifth consecutive year.
The
College band which has been performing over the past few years,
maintains a high standard. “It was in 2000 that we decided
to have a concert of this magnitude. Cultural Sounds, Oriental Rhapsody,
New Chapter Music, Unique Blend in Rhythm were pulled off with great
success,” says the band leader Roshayne Wanniarachchi.
The
concert will be featuring the hewisi bands of Royal College, D.S.
Senanayake College, St. Paul’s, Milagiriya, Museus College,
Methodist College, Bishop’s College and S. Thomas’ College.
“We
are well known for doing something different each year, being the
first hewisi band to have featured electric guitars (at New Chapter
in Music), and a magnificent drum orchestra of a very high standard.
We continue to keep the audience guessing about what our next step
would be,” adds the project chairperson, Thamaranga Gunasena.
The
college band is blessed with great talent, and among them Roshayne
playing thammattama, Dinesh Perera on geta bera, Shanel Fonseka
playing the dawula, Dharshana Jayasekara with the Cymbal and the
head of the flutists’, Ravith Goonewardena, combining with
the rest of the band are sure to inspire the gathering. “Having
undergone stressful practice sessions and a lot of guidance the
boys are well set for this year’s concert,” says the
master-in-charge Sarath Wijayawardana.
The
concert will be held on Saturday, October 8 at 7.00 p.m., at the
College chapel steps. Tickets are available at the College office
and at the gate.
