Postal
Department back to normal
By Nalaka Nonis
Postal Department services which were hampered last week following
the work-to-rule campaign by trade unions, will be back to normal
from tomorrow after the Government conceded their demands, Post
and Telecommunication Ministry Secretary P. Ranasinghe said.
However
he said it will take a few days before approximately 1.4 million
accumulated letters are cleared. Mr. Ranasinghe said though an agreement
was reached to grant the demands of the employees some demands would
need as long as three months to be met.
Sorting
out salary anomalies, filling vacancies, granting promotions and
permanent appointments were a few of the demands. Union of Post
and Telecommunication Officers general secretary K. Weerasekara
said the nine trade unions which resorted to the work-to-rule campaign
decided to cancel their action after Mr. Ranasinghe assured their
demands would be met.
