Death
threats disrupt SLMM plans
By Chris Kamalendran
The SLMM in the Eastern Province has come under threat prompting
it to suspend plans to open a new office in Welikanda in Polonnaruwa,
transfer two of its monitors out of the province and step up their
own security, The Sunday Times learns.
SLMM
head Hagrup Haukland declined to comment on the matter saying, “I
do not want to comment about these to the media”. The Sunday
Times learns that the threats were made after the monitors met the
LTTE renegade Karuna group members in the Thrikonamadu area last
month.
Mr.
Haukland visited Batticaloa this week and held discussions with
the security forces including General Officer Commanding 52 Brigade
in Batticaloa, Major Gen. Tissa Jaywardena and the STF.
Two
monitors including Batticaloa district monitoring team head, Steen
Joergensen were transferred out of the east consequent to death
threats over the telephone. The local driver too has received death
threats.
