Nalanda halt Trinco Brigade
By Bernie Wijesekera
A bunch of Marauding cricketers from Trincomalee took Campbell Place
by storm when they turned tables on much fancied Zahira College,
Maradana on the opening day of the Old Wesleyites SC cricket sixes
that got underway last morning.
Ironically
after heroics in the morning session they faced the misfortune of
facing the defending champions Nalanda who undid them in a gruelling
battle where burly Tharindu Attanayake hit six hits over the ropes
and remain at 54 not out and thus taking the game away from the
lads from the North-east. In reply to Trincomalee District’s
respectable total of 65 runs, Nalanda ran amok to post 68 for noloss.
Earlier
in the day, Led by a charge by skipper Shakthi Bravan from Koneswara
Hindu College who made a quick fire 30 runs with three sixes and
two fours, the lads from the Trincomalee District team ran up to
post a total of 67 for 5 in their allotted overs. Zahira College
in their turn could only muster 51runs.
In the other match that involved schools from the North, the Jaffna
District team put up a brave show but lost to St. Benedict’s
by four runs.
In
another game the Josephian skipper Angelow Mathew scored a belligerent
54 not out and led his team to a win against Isipathana. Mathew
in his knock hit three sixes and four fours. He followed this effort
with another fine knock of 59 runs against Lumbini later in the
day.
