Say hello to rainy days
By N. Dilshath Banu
The alarm rings, yet you cover up and go to sleep again. Once you wake up, half of the day has already gone. But there’s been no beam of sunlight, no warm breeze. All you see is horrible weather. It’s one of those rainy days…
When rain pours for a moment and then disappears, there seems to be no problem (besides, it controls the dust on roadsides). But sometimes, accompanied with chilly breezes, the rain just comes down in torrents. When the days are long and aggravated by cold weather, you get the blues. And all you want to do is cover up and sleep, till the sun shines again. For some, rain makes them sick of life and quite depressed.

Whether you feel bored or depressed because of the weather, you are not to blame. According to researchers, when the days are shorter with less sunlight, production of the sleep-related hormone, melatonin, goes up. This explains the secret behind rainy day blues.

However, while most of us complain and sleep through rainy days, few of us really enjoy the natural cleanser; some do many things to occupy themselves to pass the days. And some simply love the rain! They wouldn’t even mind going out in it, and dance with their umbrellas!

Fazal (20) says, “I love rain and love to cuddle up and sleep. But most of the time, I try to do lots of things in order to occupy my rainy days, such as study, surf the net, watch a movie, clean up my room. And on rainy days, I like to hang on the phone and speak with my friends; just chill and have some fun. If possible, we try making plans to get together.”

Udaya (20) says, “Rainy days never make me bored. I enjoy playing my guitar when it pours. The dim, cold and wet climate helps me to enjoy the music and sometimes, helps me find new tunes. I feel very relaxed and calm with the kind of music I want to hear.”

Sanjaya (21) says, “I love rain, but not too much. More than anything, I like to listen to the raindrops that fall onto the roof. You would notice that the noise differs according to the type of the roof, creating a different beat. This noise helps to me calm down. As a result, it helps me focus on the things I like do, like writing and reading. So, I don’t get bored, because of the rain.”

Eighteen-year-old Geetha (name cha-nged) admits that she loves the rain as it plays a major role in her life. “It’s such a coincidence that every time something major happens in my life, it rains. For example, when I got my O/level results, when I met my first love and when we let go of our love, it rained the whole day. So, when it rains, I enjoy every drop as I know that something will happen!”

However for Siji (21), rainy days don’t make any difference. “I don’t do anything special on rainy days. It’s just the same chores as I do on sunny days. Covering up and sleeping can be boring. By concentrating on my current chores, I try not to feel bored.”

It’s amazing how one tries to make gloomy days wonderful by doing something special they want to do, when everything is going wet and dizzy. It’s okay to sleep for a short while when the weather turns gloomy and creates the right set to doze off. But the problem arises when the rain seems never to cease and boredom sets in. It is then that you should try to do something to keep you going.

Remember, when the sun is hidden among the clouds and everything seems dull, you can light your inner sunshine and create many rainbows!
