Continuing
violence aimed at journalists, media condemned
The Newspaper Society representing major newspaper groups has condemned
the continuing violence against journalists and media institutions.
The statement said;
“The
Newspaper Society of Sri Lanka, representing the major newspaper
groups in the country, is alarmed at the continuing violence against
journalists and media institutions. The most recent attack on the
media was at the premises where Sunday Leader is printed, when the
privacy of a private institution printing the newspaper was invaded
by hooligans creating panic and fear among the workers, by setting
fire to bundled newspapers and damaging equipment.
Fortunately
no one was hurt unlike in the attack only a few weeks ago at the
Sudar Oli office, leading to a fatality. Press freedom is the corner
stone of democracy and it is incumbent on any democratic Government
to ensure freedom of expression of its citizens. The Newspaper Society
condemns this kind of violence and once again calls upon the Government,
all political parties and the Police to ensure that violence in
any form is not tolerated.”
