Indonesia says it is seeking substantial compensation for the family
of its national killed in an accident at the Bandaranaike International
Airport. A 36-year-old Indonesian woman, identified as Muskana Dindijejen,
a mother of two children aged 5 and 7, was killed when an airport
truck hit the descending ramp of a SriLankan Airlines aircraft last
Sunday.
She
was to be on transit in Colombo while on her way to Dubai where
she was employed. An Indonesian embassy official said that the Rs.
1,000,000 compensation the Airline was planning to pay the victim’s
family was unacceptable.
“We
are trying to get substantial compensation for the victim’s
family,” Nasaruddin Siradz, the embassy’s head of Consular
Affairs said.
He said that according to preliminary inquiries, the driver of the
SriLankan Airlines truck swerved to the left instead of applying
brakes to avoid collision with an oncoming vehicle.
In
the process he hit the descending ramp. Mr. Siradz said the airline
had flown the body to Indonesia and sent a cheque through the Sri
Lankan High Commission in Jakarta to the victim’s family to
meet the funeral expenses. SriLankan Airlines Corporate Communication
Chief Chandana de Silva said they were awaiting the final report
of the police probe to finalise insurance claims. He said a substantial
compensation would be paid to the victim’s family.
