The
day of the Dark Angel
By N.Dilshath Banu
Having witnessed many concerts starting half hour lately or more,
I walked in leisurely to my destination, with a relaxed mind thinking
the audience must be still waiting.
But
Alas! I was really wrong. The colorful lights were flashing with
the rhythmic music echoing all over. The stage had already been
unveiled with the most wanted trio of the night.
It's
the concert you could never miss. It was the Mega Concert of Centigradz,
at Bishop’s College Auditorium. The twelve songs featured
in ‘Urumaya’ including ‘Dark Angel’ were
performed live on stage. In addition, they performed ‘Nage’,
the track that they would be including in their second album. That's
not all, the night offered variety of entertainment programs confluent
with the main event.
With
the slow euphonic music by the instruments, the Centigradz took
the flow with their RnB "Sulaga Se…" (It's true
that they have the talent to do either way- with instruments and
with the main music!).
Then
the flow began to move. Clad in white and black, the trio- Amila,
Udaya and Ishan came to the stage, while the music wizard Thusith,
clad in red, weave the web of tunes from the instruments in the
right side corner.
The next three tracks played by the Centigradz, "Oba Mata Himi
Vedo", "Heena Atharin", " Penena Nopenena",
spell bounded the audience. The alluring romantic classical rhythm
and the emotional voice of Udaya, carried away the audience to the
world of their sweet dreams.
To
add spices, the stage was turned by a band called, 'U-Turn', comprising
of three boys and a girl and played two songs, " Blue Eyes"
and a Bhangra Track. They started with old rhythmic music but ended
as rigorous rappers. The romantic sphere enchanted by the Centigradz
started to change the mood among the crowd. Afterwards, "Blue
print", comprising of seven boys took the stage and performed
Peace song.
Soon,
the 'Black Unit' a dance group from Kandy was ready to move the
feet and drew the stagnant crowd to the dance floor, followed by
the intrigue dance of 'Natandaa'- a retro dance group. The dance
was a mix of traditional and modern twist, and portrays the slithering
movements of the jungle.
The curtained unveiled and 'D-Tap', a group from Down South brought
back the dispersed audience to their seats. Next, the Centigradz
appeared on stage, not to play a song of their own but a requested
song. And sang, "Enchores" which reflected the camaraderie
of Centrigradz playing a different beat. Next performance was by
'Side Effect', with full of noise, which made the pulse of the audience
swing.
Audience
screamed for Centigradz, but when the curtain unveiled all they
saw was group of female dancer clad in Kandyan attire. Yes, it's
dance performance, but it's for the "Heritage"- the music
of Centigradz. The music goes parallel to the movements of the dancers,
taking the auiendence back to history of Sri Lanka.
The
amazing dance by Chandana Wickremasinghe’s dance troupe really
made the crowd go wild. Next track was the "Sandawathiye',
mostly known as "Thana Thana" was performed by another
dance group, "Akanita". Clad in elegant 'Redda Hatte',
they performed the village dance while the Centigradz voiced the
track.
When
the Centigradz took some time way from the stage, the 'Outlaws',
comprising of Shiraz and Sajith and another new band, 'Swastika'
rocked the show. The curtained closed down again.
The
crowd went wild and screamed for Centigradz again. Then comes the
Centrigradz to rock Colombo! Starting with "Tradition"
and then moved to the "Unknown" and they invited the crowd
to dance through "Natamu". The rival crowd had filled
the space between the stage and front row, started to dance according
to the their own style. Those who were seated moved their body in
one place. Udaya sang specially to the ladies not to go away through
their new track ‘Nage’.
The
most wanted song, "Dark Angel" which rocked Sri Lanka
for many weeks, and still pops up people, made the crowd even crazier.
While Amila and Udaya rapping to beat, Ishan sang the Chorus, with
a bashful smile.
Finally,
all those who performed on the stage joined the Centigradz and marched
toward their final track, ‘Heritage’. All danced to
the max, while Centigradz music mesmerizing their minds!
