Citizens’
group quizzes candidates
The Citizens’ Movement for Good Governance (CIMOGG) has appealed
to the two main Presidential contenders -- Premier Mahinda Rajapakse
and Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe -- to answer a questionnaire
to help people identify who would be the true leader to govern the
country. CIMOGG asks
whether
the two candidates would relinquish all positions they currently
hold in their political party on the assumption of office as the
President of this country so as to serve as a national leader and
trustee of all the people
“Will you take appropriate steps to remove the immunity from
prosecution enjoyed by the President and be open to legal scrutiny
of your actions as a way of raising public confidence in the Executive
Presidency” the questionnaire asked.
“Will you hold a referendum within six months of assuming
office to honour the commitment undertaken at the signing of the
Indo-Sri Lanka Accord to determine whether the people of the Eastern
Province wish a merger with the Northern Province, given that the
ground situation had allowed the conducting of Parliamentary and
Presidential elections during the past few years,” was another
question CIMOGG asked.
