Union
doubts halt new oil refinery
By Chandani Kirinde
On a request by Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and Power and Energy
Minister Susil Premajayantha the Government decided to defer a Cabinet
decision taken two weeks ago to allow private investors to build
a US$ 795 million oil refinery at Sapugaskanda.
The request was made following representations by trade unions in
the sector.
A CPC trade union spokesman said they had requested the Prime Minister
to temporarily halt the project as there was some suspicion in the
manner in which the project was being handled.
“We requested that first talks be held with the trade unions
and if we are satisfied that there is nothing detrimental in the
project, we would support it,’ the spokesman said.
