Gopi
released but LTTE won’t budge
By Chris Kamalendran
The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission yesterday hit out at the LTTE for
refusing to release the three policemen being held by it since September
8.
SLMM Chief Hagrup Haukland said he had visited the Wanni for talks
with LTTE political wing leader S.P. Thamilselvan but his appeal
had not been heeded.
The three policemen arrested when they went to a Tiger controlled
area in pursuit of a British paedophile were produced in an LTTE
court again on Tuesday and remanded till November 8.
The
Sunday Times learns that earlier the LTTE was demanding that one
of their key members taken into custody in connection with the assassination
of SSP Jaffna, Charles Wijewardena should be released for the LTTE
to release the three policemen.
The LTTE member identified as Gopi was released by a Colombo court
after eyewitnesses to the abduction of the SSP failed to identify
the suspect. However on Friday the LTTE told the SLMM chief that
the release of Gopi should not be linked to the release of the three
policemen.
